Next time you’re on a long bus ride stop playing Candy Crush and download Amazon Mechanical Turk (MTurk). I’ve wasted countless hours trying every paid survey website out there and none of them compare to Amazon’s Human Intelligence Tasks (HITs).
Have you ever visited a survey site that coerced you into answering five minutes worth of qualifying questions just to be disqualified? That doesn’t happen on Mturk. MTurk tasks can range from surveys to rating songs to playing games on your iPhone. There’s a variety of transcription and translation jobs to choose from and just about any other small assignment you can think of.
There’s a search option where it’s as simple as checking a button to filter qualifications. There are some exceptions where individual HITs have short eligibility checks. In my experience, they never take less than a minute.
It can take a while to get into the groove and figure out which tasks are worth completing. Reddit even has a forum dedicated to “worthwhile” HITS. In the beginning, it is worth it to perform rapid penny tasks to get your completion rates up. There are milestones at 500 and 1,000 HITs. Some jobs don’t become available until you complete a set amount of tasks.
If you’re a U.S. resident you can choose to be paid via Amazon payments. There’s no minimum and no transaction fees. This isn’t a recommended source of income but if you just need a bit of extra cash for a beer. It’ll do.
